Jewelry Care

Fine jewelry is a timeless investment, one that should be cherished for a lifetime. Proper care is key to preserving its beauty for years to come. By following the right cleaning and storage practices, you can ensure that your jewelry remains as stunning as the day you first wore it. Read on for expert tips on how to maintain your necklaces, rings, earrings, and bracelets, so you can continue to enjoy these special pieces for years to come.

How to Clean Jewelry

There’s nothing quite like the sparkle of a new piece of jewelry. Over time, however, that brilliance can fade, leaving your jewelry looking dull and tarnished. Fortunately, with the right care, you can restore its shine. While taking your jewelry to a professional for a thorough cleaning is always an option, you can also clean it yourself in a quick and cost-effective way. The key is to be gentle. A simple mixture of warm water and mild, unscented soap—free of degreasers or strong chemicals—is all you need. Soak your jewelry in the solution, then gently scrub it with a soft toothbrush. Finish by rinsing your jewelry with clean water, then gently wipe it with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Though this method works for most pieces, it’s always a good idea to consult a professional jeweler—especially the one you purchased from—to ensure the best care for your precious items.

How to Store Fine Jewelry

Caring for your jewelry goes beyond regular cleaning—proper storage plays a key role in preserving its beauty and longevity. Storing your pieces thoughtfully can prevent tarnish, discoloration, and scratches, while also helping you keep track of your collection.

Store in a Clean & Dry Space

Keep your jewelry in a dry, low-humidity environment. The box or pouch your piece came in is designed to protect it from dust and moisture—don’t throw it away! Whether you use the original packaging or a larger jewelry box, make sure it’s lined and compartmentalized to avoid tangling or scratching.

Use Individual Pouches or Compartments

To prevent metal-on-metal contact, store each piece separately—especially items made of 14k or 18k gold, which can scratch more easily than higher karat gold or platinum. Soft fabric pouches or dividers help preserve their finish.

Safe Storage for Special Pieces

If you own high-value or sentimental pieces, consider storing them in a secure location like a home safe or safety deposit box. For frequently worn items, a dedicated jewelry tray or box on your vanity makes daily access easy while protecting them when not in use.

A Simple Habit That Makes a Difference

Always return your jewelry to the same place at the end of the day. It’s a small habit that helps prevent misplacing your most-loved items.

Jewelry Care Tips

Keeping your fine jewelry looking its best goes beyond cleaning and storage. With a few mindful habits, you can extend the life and beauty of your favorite pieces.

Keep Jewelry Away from Chemicals

Even though 14k and 18k gold and platinum are durable, harsh chemicals can damage both metals and gemstones. While it’s easy to avoid obvious culprits like bleach or chlorine, be mindful of less apparent ones found in everyday products. Skincare items such as sunscreen, lotion, and perfume can dull finishes and weaken settings over time. It’s best to put on your jewelry after applying these products.

Limit Sun Exposure

Just like your skin, some gemstones are sensitive to sunlight. Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause certain stones—like kunzite—to fade or lose their brilliance. When spending extended time in the sun, consider leaving delicate or light-sensitive pieces at home.

Remove Jewelry at the Gym, Spa, or Pool side

Moisture, chlorine, saltwater, and lotions—these environments are tough on fine jewelry. Whether you’re working out, relaxing in a sauna, or taking a swim, it’s safest to leave your pieces behind to avoid potential damage or loss.

Insure Your Jewelry

Even with the best care, accidents can happen. For high-value pieces, jewelry insurance offers an added layer of protection and peace of mind. It’s a smart step to ensure your cherished items are covered in case of loss, theft, or damage.
